How Many People Have Already Fumbled Their New Year’s Resolutions?
That question hit me today when I was at the gym. For the first few days this year, the gym was packed. I saw a lot of new faces. I wondered how many would be sticking around. Today, the gym was significantly lighter. I came in and did my workout without having to wait for any machine. I wondered what happened to the rush of individuals that were there this past week. Did they already fumble their resolutions? How many of you have broken yours?
The problem with New Year’s resolutions is that they’re not lifestyle changes. We’re conditioned to believe that results can be achieved in hours and days, not years. How many times have you seen the 14 day weight-loss plan? If it’s too good to be true, it is. There’s no magic formula. It’s hard work and lifestyle changes that actually show results, but those lifestyle changes are long.
Have you thought about what a lifestyle change actually means? I’m assuming that most of you know, if you’re not yourself, a vegan or a vegetarian. Vegetarians do not take breaks from being vegetarians. They don’t “cheat” on Christmas by eating meat and then go back to being a vegetarian. When you go on vacation, you don’t stop showering just because you’re on vacation. Showering is a deeply engraved habit. Can you skip showering? Of course you can, but you don’t.
